Alan's recordings of music for piano duet with the pianist Peter Lawson have enjoyed critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, the first receiving Fanfare's "Disc of the Year", and are broadcast regularly on BBC radio and networks abroad.
A graduate of The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Alan studied with the Hungarian pianist Bela Simandi and received the award for the most outstanding student in his final year. Further study followed with internationally renowned pianists including Karl Ulrich Schnabel. Although principally a pianist Alan also studied violoncello and singing and trained as a conductor under the tutelage of David Lumsden. Much in demand as a chamber musician, he has played with many of the country's leading instrumentalists and he premiered Malcolm Arnold's Suite Bourgeoise for Piano Trio and a recent arrangement of John Field's Rondo in A flat for Piano and Orchestra.
Alan's schedule for 2016/17 includes festival engagements and masterclasses throughout the Midlands, the South West, London, Birmingham and Edinburgh and Hong Kong. He will be joined by the violist Carol Hubel-Allen, (Duo Karadys), in a series of recitals throughout September and October. The pair recently recorded Schubert's 'Arpeggione' Sonata and David Earl's Sonata for Viola and Piano, a work they premiered at the 2014 Cheltenham Music Festival.
A third CD of piano duet music has been recorded with the pianist and conductor, Gavin Sutherland, to be released in Spring 2017
Now freelance and based in the West End of Glasgow, following twenty years' experience as Head of Keyboard Studies at The Cheltenham Ladies' College, Alan welcomes all enquiries about recitals, accompanying, teaching and adjudicating.
